Room Addition Blue Prints

The purpose of room addition blueprints is to be an instruction manual and a map. It shows how a room addition project should be constructed. It’s composed of building plans, electric and mechanic layouts and has information on any special requirements.

Most people believe room addition blueprints are difficult to interpret and they feel intimidated by it; but the fact is that people can learn to read blueprints and use it to have a vision of what the room addition project will look like.

Here are the instructions on how to read blueprints:

  • Title page- the first sheet in the set contains a list of the drawings for the project. Title page also contains a list of symbols and abbreviations. Review the list in order to know what these items refer to.
  • Scale of plans- using a scale to represents a large building on a small sheet of paper, and show proportion at the same time. Scales should be kept in mind while examining the plans.
  • Architectural drawings- these are the first few drawings in the set and are marked as “A” followed by a number. These drawings show floor plans, exterior elevations and finish selection. These plans give good overview of the project.
  • Mechanical drawings- these drawings will show heating, air conditioning systems and plumbing information. These drawings follow the architectural plans and will be marked as “M” followed by a number.
  • Electrical plans- these plans are showing at the end of the set and marked as “E” followed by a number. These plans show the locations of receptacles, switches and wiring and light fixtures. By examining these plans you will be a able to get a picture of the building’s electrical layout.
  • “Spec Book”- this is the specification manual. “Spec Book” provides information regarding methods and materials to be used in the project. A room addition contractor will use the “Spec book” and the plans for project's construction.
